At least a dozen children who underwent cardiac surgery at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans this summer have contracted a rare surgical-site infection caused by bacteria. The Watson professorship is the latest in a series of similarly prestigious posts that began with Princeton Theological Seminary’s 1992 appointment of J. Wentzel van Huyssteen as the first James I. McCord Professor of Theology and Science. In mid-August, Rachel Day (AU’11) will begin an environmental science master’s program at Miami University’s Institute for the Environment and Sustainability (IES, Oxford, OH).
Your membership promotes scientific literacy and gives millions of students opportunities to fall in love with science. Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer , professor of chemistry, was selected for the Fulbright Specialists Program as an agricultural science specialist and spent six weeks this summer hosted by Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia. These scholarship dollars are given by the State of Ohio to support Ohio high school students entering STEM college programs. We have supported 24 students so far and plan to provide additional scholarships for our incoming Fall 2014 class. What matters are the values and ideals that drive us, not just the who, what, when, and where of the news.
Dr. Corbin also gave a presentation (From a Non-Majors Course to Undergraduate Research: Integration of NMR Spectroscopy Across the Chemistry Curriculum at Ashland University”) in which he described innovative uses of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy in the courses he teaches and in the research studies he carries out with students. This State-funded scholarship program currently supports 23 Ashland science students (including Isabella, Hannah and Corey found in these pictures). He can sometimes be seen flying bats for his students in the Kettering Science Center. My experience while in the science program was extremely intriguing and hands-on.
This past year one of our environmental science courses used a new blog to share current news and research. A lecture presented by Dr. Allan M. Brandt, Kass Professor of the History of Medicine and Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University, was held on the AU campus March 29 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of an Interdisciplinary Science Course at Ashland University. It comes out weekly and is loaded with current up to the date news and flash items.
The Science News Magazine app includes the biweekly magazine and real-time news updates from all disciplines of science — from astronomy and physics to biomedicine, neuroscience, genetics, early humans, climate, ecology, animals, environment and more. Alyssa will be starting a physician assistant program in Fall of 2017 and is still deciding on which program to enter. Another Ashland Biology grad, Elizabeth Mantkowski (’13), is currently in the OT program at Cleveland State University.
