Former Rockstar Dev Predicts GTA 6 Delay

Grand Theft Auto 6 has generated $1 billion in preorders within the first hour, yet a former developer suggests the title might not hit its scheduled release date. Mike York, who previously worked at Rockstar Games, stated that the highly anticipated sequel could face a delay pushing the launch to May 2027.
The preorder listings currently display a November 19, 2026 launch date. York clarified to Indy100 that he possesses no inside information regarding a shift in the schedule. Rockstar Games has not officially indicated any change to that date.
Developer Cites Rockstar’s History of Delays
York explained that his assessment is based on Rockstar’s history and his personal experience rather than current insider knowledge. He noted that the company is willing to postpone a release if any aspect of a game does not meet its internal standards.
He stated that even minor issues, such as a buggy mission, could prompt a postponement. York views a potential move to May 2027 as a worst-case scenario if the game is not polished enough for public consumption.

The title has been in development for nearly 13 years following the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. The project has already experienced several delays during its long production cycle.
This approach mirrors the release strategies of previous major entries, where the studio has consistently prioritized stability over strict deadlines. While other publishers might rush a broken product to market to satisfy quarterly targets, Rockstar has historically favored extended development times to ensure the final product works as intended at launch.
Rockstar typically releases open-world games with a high level of polish. Earlier titles required near-perfection because post-launch patches were not an option. Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in stable condition, setting a high bar for the industry.
This focus on quality remains relevant. While modern internet connections allow for day-one patches, Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive recognize that a poor launch would damage the brand. The reception of GTA 6 will likely impact their reputation for years.
Marketing Strategy and Missing Footage
Fans have noted the absence of a third trailer. Many expected a new video showcase before preorders began, but Rockstar has not released one. Recent leaks suggest the game could be shown off again in August, though nothing has been confirmed by the studio.

Financial pressure to release early is likely minimal given the initial consumer response. Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar understand that strong sales are almost guaranteed regardless of the specific release date.
Rockstar does not strictly require additional marketing to drive sales numbers at this stage given the preorders are high. However, releasing new footage, particularly hands-on gameplay, could help reassure fans about the game’s readiness for the fall 2026 window.
The company must balance fan anticipation with the practical reality of finishing the game. York’s comments are speculative. The May 2027 date is an estimate of a potential delay, not a confirmed schedule change.
Rockstar has not announced any change to the release date. The November 19, 2026 target remains the official launch window for now.
