Samsung’s flagship HW-Q990F Dolby Atmos soundbar has dropped to $999.99 on Amazon, half its original price of $1,997.99. The discount marks the lowest price recorded by price trackers for the 2025 model, which features an 11.1.4-channel setup with rear speakers included in the box.

Design and Audio Performance

The Q990F builds on its predecessor, the Q990D, with a redesigned subwoofer that ditches the grille cover for visible eight-inch woofers. Samsung says the change gives the system a more modern look while maintaining the same overall footprint.

Audio support covers just about every major format: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and Samsung’s Eclipsa Audio, a co-developed standard that hasn’t gained widespread adoption yet. The four up-firing drivers create ceiling bounce effects that reviewers describe as convincing in properly treated rooms. Movies sound cinematic, voices cut through clearly, and games benefit from directional effects, according to descriptions of the system.

The 11.1.4 configuration creates a wide soundstage that wraps around the listener. Users can fine-tune output using EQ, voice level, and height channel adjustments. Samsung’s audio division has been pushing the Q990F as its flagship offering for home theater enthusiasts who want immersive sound without the complexity of a traditional receiver-based setup. The system handles the decoding and processing internally, meaning users simply connect their TV and sources and let the soundbar manage the rest.

The wireless Dolby Atmos feature specifically requires compatible Samsung televisions, allowing audio data to stream over WiFi rather than requiring a physical HDMI connection between the TV and soundbar. This can simplify cable management in setups where running HDMI through walls or furniture would be difficult.

Eclipsa Audio, Samsung’s format developed in partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, uses spatial audio technology similar to Dolby Atmos but without licensing fees. While content availability remains limited, the Q990F’s support ensures the system won’t become obsolete if the format gains traction among streaming services or game developers.

The rear speaker kit included in the box contains two wireless units that position behind the listening area, handling ambient and surround channel information. This completes the 11.1.4 designation, where the first number represents main channels, the second represents subwoofer outputs, and the final figure indicates height channels—in this case four upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling to simulate overhead audio.

Buyers considering the Q990F should note that the subwoofer’s compression at high volumes is typical for powered subs in this price range.
