Valve updates Steam pages for Lepton and FEX

Valve has updated the Steam pages for Lepton and FEX, two compatibility tools enabling the Arm-based Steam Frame VR headset to run PC and Android games. These tools work with Proton to translate and execute software across architectures and are expected to be essential for the device’s functionality at launch.

The headset uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 SoC and runs a SteamOS build based on Arch Linux. Lepton and FEX do not yet have public Steam Store pages, though their update histories are available in the SteamDB archive.

Lepton and FEX address separate aspects of software compatibility. Lepton is expected to use the container-based Waydroid system to run Android applications on a full Linux distribution.

The method resembles how Proton enables Windows games to run on Linux through Wine. Initial references to Lepton appeared online in 2025, suggesting Valve was developing a significant Android compatibility solution.

FEX is an emulator that translates API calls and recompiles code from x86 applications into native Arm64 implementations. It aims to minimize emulation overhead and enhance performance.

FEX already supports a wide range of 32-bit and 64-bit x86 applications. It has also been promoted as a tool to use with Wine and Proton for running Windows games on Arm devices.

The platform will use a three-part compatibility system. Lepton manages Android games through its container-based approach, FEX translates x86-64 native code to Arm, and Proton enables Windows-based software to run on the Arm architecture.

The headset operates on a SteamOS build based on Arch Linux and uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 SoC. Valve financially supports the Arch Linux project. With involvement in the FEX project, the emulator could achieve similar success to Proton in the Linux gaming market.
