FF14 Heads to Nintendo Switch 2

Final Fantasy 14 is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, Square Enix has announced. The full MMORPG experience will be available, though performance will be lower than on more powerful platforms.
The Switch 2 version requires a separate subscription and 117.2 GB of storage, but does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
The port targets new players and provides existing users with a portable alternative. However, the separate subscription model may disappoint some fans, as existing subscribers must pay again to play on this platform.
Performance on Switch 2 will be lower due to hardware limitations. The file size is another concern, as it may exceed the Switch 2’s internal storage.

Both the subscription model and storage needs could limit adoption among existing players. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required, which helps offset some of the additional subscription cost.
The Switch 2 release is part of a broader Final Fantasy schedule. Final Fantasy Resonance, based on the Brave Exvius mobile game, arrives in October 2026.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final entry in the FF7 remake trilogy, and the Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy 14 are both planned for 2027.
Players should consider the following points:
- A separate subscription is required; existing Final Fantasy 14 subscriptions on other platforms do not transfer to Switch 2.
- At least 117.2 GB of storage is needed, which may require a microSD Express card due to limited internal capacity.
- Performance will be lower than on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox because of the Switch 2’s hardware limitations.
- A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required, which helps offset some of the additional subscription cost.
For regular players, the Switch 2 version could be a convenient way to play on the go, even if it’s not as powerful as other platforms.

Final Fantasy 14 launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4. Square Enix has not yet explained how character or progress sharing will work between Switch 2 and other platforms, nor has it confirmed the exact pricing for the separate subscription.
The port’s success will depend on both existing players seeking portability and newcomers, with the Evercold expansion set for 2027.
Square Enix has a number of other releases planned, including Final Fantasy Resonance and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
The ability to play without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is a plus, but the separate subscription model may still be a drawback for some fans.
